July 27 brought together primary schools from across Hervey Bay to plant 400 trees at WBWC’s Bunya Farm as part of National Tree Day celebrations. The trees contribute towards WBWC’s plantation goal of one million trees irrigated by Hervey Bay’s wastewater by 2010.

More than 260 children from Sandy Straits, Urangan Point, Pialba, Torquay, Yarrilee, Star of the Sea, St Helens, Fraser Coast Anglican and Xavier primary schools participated in the event:

The corporation’s tree plantations, which currently hold 300,000 trees, solely rely on the city’s treated wastewater, a far better use than pumping it into waterways where it can have damaging effects on the marine environment.

It also provides a valuable asset for Hervey Bay in terms of carbon trading credits and timber products and a haven for local wildlife.

My role with National Tree Day

Each year for National Tree Day I arranged the invitations and transport for the school children to visit our tree plantations. I also organised the seedlings for planting, staff supervision, lunch and refreshments, first aid, showbags for each child including stickers and activity booklets, educational resources for the teaching staff, and local media opportunities.
